Well, this is week two without any job offers. It’s hard to be a geek without a day job; I have the tendency to want stay online or watch Sci Fi marathons. Or game.
Ironically, I don’t have the time to do any of those things! It seems that keeping a household in line, looking for jobs, and doing odd jobs around the house is actually rather time consuming! Who knew? Well, my wife for one.
This is actually the first time I’ve had a chance to hop on the blog, I haven’t been really able to game, and in all my time online so far I haven’t really been on IM. I think I’m actually working harder at home now without pay then I was at work!
Yesterday I decided to get some yard work done. I actually take a great deal of pride in how my yard looks, and a healthy yard is a better place to banish the kids to when you want them out of the house. I get the feeling the last occupants never turned on the sprinklers, cause the yard and trees are nearly dead (I can also look up our place on Google Maps and see a dead yard from last year too).
Mowed the lawn, started work on the weeds, fixed a fence, drove posts for a new fence, cleared some overgrown areas, opened up a flowerbed, and programmed the sprinklers. Without gloves.
People who know me will tell you that I have “gentle hands”. Well, they’ll tell you that if they like me. Otherwise, they’ll say I have wussy hands. My hands are nice and smooth without any indication of a hard days work. In truth, my hands just heal really well; I’ve played violin since 4th Grade with no calluses, have cuts and gashes without scars, have had entire sections of skin peeled off and healed over without any sign.
Except I now also have two large blisters where I was holding the sledgehammer. Normally I’d tell myself to suck it up and be a man, but then I notice how much it hurts to hold a mouse and I feel a little sad inside. Strangly enough, even though my hands have no marks of work, my right wrist has a heavy callus on the ball joint opposite the thumb.
That’s right; despite all my other activities, it’s the constant use of the computer mouse that gives me my only callus!
I guess we all have the marks of our trade.
On a completely unrelated note, we have a new member registered with us. This is noteworthy, since they are the first one who has joined us that I have not specifically told about the site! So welcome Shifu! (they’ll get the reference).
