Pacific Rim: Uprising has been in development for quite a while now, but the giant robots fighting giant monsters sequel is finally coming to theaters in 2018. Guillermo del Toro is no longer directing, and has been replaced by Steven S. DeKnight. He will be making his directorial feature debut with a script written by Kong: Skull Island and Jurrasic World scriptwriter Derek Connolly.
I am a HUGE del Toro fan and was disappointed to see him go, but DeKnight has some serious television credits with shows like Angel, Spartacus, the first season of Daredevil and Smallville under his belt. The film will also feature Star Wars: The Force Awakens actor, John Boyega who will be playing Jake Pentecost, the son of Stacker Pentecost played by Idris Elba, who sacrificed himself in the first film.
Boyega will star alongside Jing Tian, Cailee Spaeny, Scott Eastwood, Adria Arjona, Jing Tian, and Ivanna Sakhno. There are reports claiming that Dr. Newton “Newt” Geisler (played by Charlie Day) and Dr. Herman Gottlieb (played by Burn Gorman) will both play significant roles in “Pacific Rim: Uprising.”
Plot details are still pretty scarce, but the film takes place a few years after the events of the first film. The Kaijus are no longer a direct threat to humanity, and the world is protected by the Jaeger technology. The trailer is a recruitment trailer for Jaeger pilots, and we see Gypsy Danger is back along with some new Jaeger Robots. I’m sure there will be plenty of new and innovative Kaijus to do battle with too. Let’s hope a full trailer comes early this coming fall.
Pacific Rim: Uprising will be hitting theaters in 2018.
