Marvel Back In Theaters: A Look At “Thor 2″
In recent years, it seems as if Marvel has just about taken over the world. Not only are the films seemingly more popular every year, but we’re also seeing Marvel’s comics, characters and influence in other aspects of entertainment and pop culture.
In gaming, for example, Marvel characters and themes have become incredibly prevalent. Not only are there games based on polar characters available in the iOS and Android app stores, as well as for major consoles, but even in more distant avenues of gaming, Marvel makes itself known. Take the Betfair online casino as one example. At this site, in addition to classic poker and casino games, you’ll find a range of original arcade options and themed slot machines, including one called “The Amazing Spider-Man!” where the web-slinger theme puts a twist on an ordinary gambling option.
In other aspects of entertainment and culture as well, we’re seeing Marvel with increasing influence. Comic book sales have generally trended up following the recent film releases; characters like Tony Stark are flaunting serious advertising power (for Audi, in particular); and of course, there’s even the “Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.” television show now, bringing the Avengers to cable TV!
But despite this wide and ever-increasing cultural spread, nothing exemplifies Marvel quite like new films, and that’s why there’s so much growing excitement over the impending release of “Thor 2.” The first Marvel movie since the spring’s wildly popular “Iron Man 3,” “Thor 2″ will see the return of arguably the most surprisingly popular Avenger in what looks like a darker story than we’re used to. Here’s a bit about what we know so far.
“Thor 2″ – also being called “Thor: The Dark World” – is set for release in the United States on November 8th, and was directed by Alan Taylor. The film will concern Thor’s (Chris Hemsworth) journey and struggle following the commonly referenced “events in New York” (meaning the ending of “The Avengers”) as he fights to protect Earth – and, seemingly, the universe as a whole – from a new, dark enemy.
The trailer for the movie references a dark power from before the dawn of the universe, and we now know that the headline villain will be Malekith (perhaps the most sinister name we’ve ever heard), played by Christopher Eccleston. This is intriguing for a few reasons. To begin with, going by Marvel lore, Malekith is about the most formidable villain you can find; additionally, the character is known to have formed an alliance with Loki, which is intriguing in that the trailer seems to show Thor attempting to ally with Loki (Tom Hiddleston) himself.
The bottom line, however, is that even a glance at the poster will show you a very dark Thor. Given the generally comedic approach not only to the original “Thor,” but to “The Avengers” as well, this marks a bold turn in the series – but one that Marvel fans can’t wait to see.
