• Apple has invited Kaspersky labs to tour their Cupertino facilities and help them address their security concerns.  Kaspersky has taken a full assessment and deemed OSX as “incredibly vulnerable”.  Also, they say to expect malware on your iPad and iPhone within a year.
• A recent evaluation of the Navy’s new high-tech cruisers has come back as “no-go”.  The evaluation reports that the mine hunter can’t see or withstand mines, the hull dissolves in water, and the construction team has completely failed every test given them.  Total cost to taxpayers? $680M so far.
• A research team has not only found a way to restore sight to the blind, but a way to externally power the implants without wires.  The implants would be powered by an infrared light from special glasses.  The future is here, and it’s brought LASER POWERED EYES!
• Mtn Dew is partnering up with WB to promote The Dark Knight Rises with a new limited edition flavor inspired by the upcoming Batman film called Mountain Dew Dark Berry.  Beware of drinking too much though as it can lead to wearing tights and staying up all night trying to avenge the murder of your parents.
• ABC wants the Hulk to smash…..on TV.  The possible TV series could break through the walls in time for the 2013-14 TV season.
• Japan has just successfully broadcast an 8K video signal over the air.  Good thing you just paid off that 1080p TV, cause it’s about to get outclassed REAL fast!
• Avengers may have made more than a billion in theaters so far but it’d be a drop in the bucket to the $160B in estimated damages to the island of Manhattan in the movie.  That’s more than 9/11, hurricane Katrina, or the Japanese tsunami.
• Netflix clocks 42 Billion API requests per month.  Nothing funny about that; just impressive.  Move along…

• Minecraft for Xbox 360 Arcade broke the digital download record in a 24 hour period. The creepers just got creepier now that they’re in your living room, and your Xbox can now show off the 1990’s style graphics in full 1080p.
• Google Maps for Android gets updated with indoor directions.  You never need to fear getting lost in the mall again.
• Angry Birds developer Rovio has plans to open amusement parks in China.  Because who doesn’t want to get launched out of a giant slingshot into a construction site?
• Dish Network announced that their latest DVR will automatically skip commercials for you . . . well, most of the commercials.  This is all at once awesome for us, and extortion for all other commercial agencies.
• Sources say Apple will be dropping Google Maps from iOS 6 at the upcoming WWDC.  That’s not surprising; what’s surprising is I guess we’re getting iOS 6 at WWDC!
• NBC has renewed Community for a 13-episode fourth season.  And there was much rejoicing.
• Director James Cameron says he’s now in “the Avatar business” and will not work on anything that is not Avatar related.  I bet Avatar 23: Return of the Avatars will be a completely original story too.

• According to The Onion, NASA has announced an ambitious new plan to get a man to Columbus, OH by the end of 2013.  The planned bus mission is expected to cost upwards of $360 of taxpayer money and is the latest in an effort for NASA to recapture some of their former glory.
• Highlighting the vulnerabilities of digital film in theaters this week, a showing of The Avengers was delayed 143 minutes when it was discovered someone had deleted the movie and it had to be re-downloaded.  I’m sure the room full of rabid geeks and film critics barely even noticed . . .
• A month ago we reported that a major credit card payment system had been hacked and lost the information for nearly 1.5 million cards.  A recent announcement from the company reveals the security breach actually happened over the course of 10 months!  Check those credit card receipts!
• A recently discovered footage reel shows an Apple ad that never made it past its initial showing.  The film in question was made in 1984 and is made to look like a war film of 1944 with Steve Jobs playing FDR, rallying his Apple Soldiers against IBM.  Watchers beware, your day is about to get strange.

I am not sure why the rest of the world is suing various US tech firms in their home countries.  However, given that the US doesn’t have 4G networks yet (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/4G#Technical_definition), it could be for misleading advertising.  I am surprised that someone in the US isn’t chasing down these firms for misleading ads.

• The Syfy channel announces five new ‘’reality’’ tv series including one from an executive producer from The Jersey Shore.  Now we are just wondering when the next name change to “A clone of every other channel network” will come about?
• Hasbro told a blogger they wanted his home address to send him freebies, instead they sent lawyers directly to his door threatening legal action and scarring his neighbors.  Way to stay classy to your customers Hasbro.
• Valve has announced a free Portal 2 DLC named the “Perpetual Testing Initiative” which will allow gamers to create their own Portal 2 levels and puzzles, the best of which will be automatically redistributed to all Portal 2 users.  One can expect at least a few of these community created levels to actually have cake.
• The FBI reports that more than 300,000 computers could lose internet access in July due to Malware.  The FBI has set up a site to see if your computer is infected: Green=Good.
• Dwarfers rejoice!.  The new cast photo for the upcoming Red Dwarf season has been released.

• As a way of saying “Thank You” for their work in identifying the recent botnet to hit OSX, Apple tried to take down the servers of the security firm who first discovered it.  Apple, who still is unsure what a “security firm” is and why anyone would need it, has been unavailable for comment.
• Nokia has acknowledged a software bug in the new Lumia 900.  To make amends, it is giving out $100 credits to anyone using the new phone (thereby making it free).  If you wait until after the software bug is fixed you can still get the $100 credit.  AT&T customers using the handset will simply notice a $100 credit on their next bill.  Long story short; Nokia just did the most innovative and straightforward thing ever seen in a mobile company!
• Joss Whedon has finally given the information needed to get Firefly back on the air.  However a lot of fans of Castle and Homeland may not like the steps needed.

• Even though it opened with a $155M weekend, The Hunger Games evidently have many fans upset by casting certain key characters as black. These fans have taken to twitter to express they wouldn’t have been as sad about characters dying in the book if they had known they were black.  Even though the book describes them as black.
• Comcast announces that the only thing that is exempt from their data cap, is if you are using their own Xfinity app for the Xbox 360 to stream video.  Strangely, Xfinity for PC is not exempt. (More on this)
• Megaupload founder Kim Dotcom breaks his silence by calling the charges against him “nonsense”.  Of course he does.
• Facebook has filed a motion to dismiss the lawsuit from Paul Ceglia who contends he owns half of the company.  Facebook claims they have found hard evidence that all of Ceglia’s evidence is forged and he is a known con man.  Ceglia counters that he has only been dropped from three law firms because they don’t believe him enough.
• Researchers may have created a drug to effectively combat all types of cancer.  By effectively painting tumor cells as damaged, a person’s own immune system will start to destroy the tumor on its own.  It may be awhile before we see this on shelves, however, as they are still trying to get into human testing trials.
• A teen in Indiana was expelled from High School when school officials found a tweet from him where he swore.  The tweet was at 2:30 AM, from a home computer.
• Amazon’s Kindle store went down in a rather violent fashion almost immediately after launching all the Harry Potter books in electronic format.  
• Spike Lee has retweeted what he thought was the address to the killer of Trayvon Martin to his 240,000 followers, encouraging them to go to his home and heckle him.  Unfortunately, the 72 year old couple who have lived there for over a decade don’t really like everyone coming to threaten them for something they have nothing to do with. This proves that maybe Twitter and Spike Lee aren’t the best place to get your facts from.

• Rumors have dropped that Microsoft is planning to launch Windows 8 in October 2012.  Reports are that both the PC and Tablet version will launch simultaneously.
• Seagate has developed new hard drive technology that’s estimated to more than double storage capacity in computer later this decade.  The new technology will reportedly put more bits of data on one square inch than there are stars in the galaxy!
• Images have leaked of a Nokia designed UI overhaul for Windows Phone 7.  As part of their agreement, Microsoft has granted Nokia the rights to create a custom skin, should the company want.  The images, however, prove that Nokia REALLY shouldn’t.
• Mass Effect “fans” have raised $67,000 in an effort to get Bioware to change the ending of Mass Effect 3, thereby asking Bioware to do what they hate Lucas for doing.
• The Walking Dead season finale shatters viewer records. DUH! It’s one of the best shows in the history of TV. Of course record numbers of people watched the finale.

• A stolen iPad led police to the largest bust of meth in US history when the owner turned on his “Find My iPad” function and gave the info to local law enforcement.  They found it sitting next to 780 pounds ($35M worth) of crystal meth.
• A $300K surveillance drone used by the police in Texas didn’t make many friends when moments after launching it crashed into the SWAT team.  The swat team were thankfully protected by their armored carrier, but now the carrier is damaged and the department is still out a drone.
• Multipleverses.com has released a collection of photos from the upcoming season of Falling Skies.  Not only is Noah Wilie back from pow-wowing with the aliens, but it looks like they’ve moved to Maine or something.
• Angry gamers have started spamming sites with negative reviews of Mass Effect 3 due to the developer’s use of a stock image in Shepard’s locker.  The picture in question is supposed to be an unmasked Tali and is a photoshopped image from Getty Photography.
• Google has rebranded the Android Market as Google Play to better describe what they’d like people to use it for.  That is, to buy things from them.
• Eagle eyed reviewers have noticed a suspicious lack of Google Maps coding in the newest iPhoto release from Apple, leading many analysts to wonder if Apple is finally ditching Google’s map function in iOS entirely.
• Google’s Chrome browser can no longer be called “hack proof” after it was compromised in under10 minutes.  The hack came from a Russian student during Google’s own “Pwnium” conference.  The student, Sergey Glazunov, walked away with a $60K prize and Google walked away with the fix to an enormous security hole they never even knew about.
• Microsoft finally officially announces their stance on OnLive’s Windows 7 and Office 2010 streaming app for iPad and Android.  No surprise, they aren’t fans of it and are going after OnLive for licensing fees.
• Game publisher CCP has announced it’s new MMO-FPS “Dust 514” will be free to play for Playstation 3 owners.  The game will be an industry first as players will occupy a world shared by PC gamers in Eve Online.
• The incompetence of RIM manged to stay out of the news this week. This this isn’t really news but we haven’t talked about them for a while.

Siri may still be beta, and might not be able to get us to an abortion clinic, but Apple’s tech is the start of something very big.  Android fans may try and convince people (themselves) that it’s the same thing as what they’ve been able to do for years but it’s not even in the same league.

It may also be in beta, not have any sort of fancy graphics, or even a major studio behind it but Minecraft has taken off in ways perhaps no one saw possible.  With a community that came out of no where, all one has to do is YouTube “minecraft” to see what everyone has done with the platform.
