X-MEN ORIGINS: WOLVERINE HD

• Wordpress updated to a new version today.  I of course instantly upgraded.  I of course did not back up the old installation.  As a result, when we realized that no matter how cool the new admin menus were, they didn’t mean much when we couldn’t write anything, we also realized we couldn’t go back to the old system.  After maybe an hour of looking around online, we found that another plug-in the site uses was conflicting with the new back end, and all was cleared up.
• I think the most convincing argument that Tab and Diet Coke both taste horrible is that it seems to be the drink of choice for chain smokers.  When I was 14, I had my very first girlfriend.  Her mom smoked like a chimney.  Walking towards their house was much like walking through Chernobyl, in that your would randomly hit pockets of tar flavored air and know that your life had just been shortened by it.  She drank Diet Coke like she’d die without it.  Since then, I’ve noticed that if a person has a Tab, or a goes through a great amount of Diet Coke, chances are good that in their other hand is a cigarette.  How else could you stand that flavor unless all you can normally taste anyway is ash.  And for anyone who says they need to drink it because they are trying to lose weight; it’s not the sugar in the soda that’s fattening, it’s the soda in the soda!
• I’m beginning to think that Carl has been in every Star Trek related comic online.  It’s actually a little eerie.

Yeah, so all those jokes about geeks not being able to get a girl, so they build a robot girl in their basement actually have a basis in reality now. Way to go!

First reported today over at The Sun, Le explains that he never had any time to “find a woman”, so instead he built one.  Granted, the man is a robotic genius and Aiko really is an extraordinary piece of technology; you only need to see the video to understand that.  But it’s his own statements about her that strike me as disturbing.

She does not need time to herself+she knows all my favorite things+she cleans for me=perfect woman!

Evidently, he’s spent two years working on her and at one point was under so much stress in creating her that he suffered a heart attack.

I’ve got news for you, pal; if you’ve got enough spare time to spend two years building a robot, you’ve got enough time to find yourself a partner.  Hell, in some cases it takes 5 minutes and a Google search.

What really strikes me is the people responding to Aiko.  Sure, I’d totally expect the scientific community to be interested in her construction and programming, as it really is quite amazing in terms of human interaction.  On the flip side, however, are people claiming that he’s playing God.  While I don’t think he’s exactly entirely on this side of reality, I don’t think he’s playing God anymore than Dell, Microsoft (maybe a bad example), or Ford do when they build a new model.

I’m surprised that some militant women’s groups aren’t a little more upset that there’s someone getting press-time who claims the perfect woman does everything for him, never complains, and only knows 1400 sentences!

The problem with so many people being on the web and not knowing what is going on behind the scenes is that they leave rather large wakes in their path; all the crappy poems they wrote when they were mad at their ex, all the embarrassing photos you didn’t think would get out, that one video (yeah, that one).  It’s all on there forever!  And it’s traceable.

I’ve been on the web now since about 2000.  I was using it before then, sure, but I wasn’t on it.  Are you on it?  Try typing your name within quotation marks into Google and hit search.  What do you get?  If you use my full name, I’m the first eight pages.  If you use my nickname, I’m the first 10.  It’s been that way for years.

That can be a scary thought, if you aren’t careful.  With very little effort you can have my location, my email address, and my thoughts on most anything I’ve ever written about (and it’s been a lot).  If you know how to search Google’s cache, you can see my forum posts for now defunct websites from seven years ago!

I’m not particularly worried, however, since I’ve always made it a point to be at least somewhat cordial to the online community.  If you wouldn’t say it to your neighbor, you shouldn’t say it online.

This is where that first group I mentioned has really messed things up, I feel.  Senator Stevens may have been horribly wrong in his explanation of the internet, however he did have one analogy right; you can’t just dump stuff on it.  All those whiny rants about your parents/teachers/friends/ex’s that just don’t understand you, those pictures you’re so “embarrassed” about, the video you thought your boyfriend wouldn’t share; they are all up there forever.  And just because you don’t think people know who you are, doesn’t mean you can just go off and dump whatever happens to be on your mind!!  It’s not like the internet has any hidden corners you can just tuck away into!

Like Picasa?  So do I.  They are owned by Google, which means every picture you’ve ever uploaded to them has been indexed and cached for the world to see.  How about Blogger?  Same story.  It’s not that I’m ragging on Google either; I use it for everything!  I use it for my email, for my online documents, even for managing the back end of this very site!  Using Google’s powerful tools, I can see every single person that comes and views the site, what page they were looking at beforehand, where they went afterwards, what ISP they used, their browser, their operating system, their city, their connection speed, and if they are a returning or a new visitor.  It doesn’t matter if you are browsing through an anonymous proxy, it doesn’t matter if you’ve made your IP private, or your site private; if you’ve linked, clicked, or browsed through Stolen Droids, I know!

I don’t want to sound like I’m Big Brother, and you shouldn’t enjoy the web (or repeatedly visit our site and tell all your friends!).  But like all things you do in public (and yes, the web IS public), you should practice restraint and civility.  You can’t just assume that you can say whatever you want, and no one will know!  The guys at Penny Arcade put it perfectly in a classic strip.

Just as an example on how interlinked the web is; I’ve now linked to Penny Arcade enough times that one of the authors tracked me down and I’m now his friend on Facebook.  Imagine if I had been ranting about it and calling them horrible things instead!  He’d probably have found me faster!

If I had to leave people with this post in the most concise way I can think of, let’s try this:  Imagine that tomorrow the human race is wiped from the face of the Earth.  Another civilization comes along and is able to recover the data centers that form the internet.  What kind of person would they think YOU were?

However, one thing that is constant is that the male star seems to have absolutely no interest in her at all!

In two of the three movies she is topless and just about begging to guy to have some fun with her, and she’s shut down each time.  Not even Bond has a roll with her.  Of course, she’s a little more angsty in QoS than most Bond Girls are, but it’s never stopped him before!!

It’s not like I go to a movie expecting a sex scene, however they happen (either shown or implied).  However if you go to a James Bond movie, you know that you are going to see stunts, cars, and women . . . to have one without those three things undoes all of creation or something (it’s in the Bible, somewhere in the back).

It’s not like I’m the only one to notice this with her.  Jeremy Clarkson even brought it up in an interview with Mark Wahlberg on Top Gear.

What is going on here?

I found this song after hearing it play in the background to one of those annoying caveman ads.  The video (I think) is awesome, since it’s pretty much how I see everything around me.

I apologize in advance if I’ve posted this before; I thought I had, but I couldn’t find it in our archives so I figured I was safe.
