This news turns my stomach. It’s one thing to explore Clark Kent’s life before he moved to Metropolis and became Superman, it’s another thing to take a kid that hooks up with Batman early in his life and try to dramatize his time before the death of his parents. This has failure written all over it. Of course, I don’t think that the CW is trying to appeal to the comic book nerd crowd. Their target audience seems to be angsty MySpacers that thrive off drama in every aspect of their lives so I could be wrong.
I think that it could work as a mini series. Then after the 2-4 part start you pull an Alias/BSG jump forward about four or five years to Nightwing. That way it doesn’t interfere with the Batman movies, since Nolan has said he wants nothing to do with Robin. Throw in some line in the 1st ep of the series that Batman is “missing” and Robin has to come out of retirement and adopt his new persona as the darker Nightwing.
Although if there is any network that will at least give a show airtime it’s the CW. Unlike say Fox for example they don’t really have much to replace it with. Fox has already canceled its first show of the season.
As with Zohner I do agree that we aren’t really the target demo for the CW. I’m about five-ten years to old, and a boy.
It’d be a longer jump than that. He didn’t become Nightwing till he was 19. That’s an 11 year jump!
I would totally like a Nightwing series, since I think that franchise has been left largely untouched outside of the comics.
Meh. If there is one thing that reading comics has taught me is that there is nothing, least of all ages, that are concrete. We’ve had 3 or 4 different Supergirls, at the beginning Superman couldn’t fly, and Batman used a gun. The Incredible Hulk was grey, Daredevil wore brown and yellow, and don’t even get me started on Cable, they make his bio up as they go along Jean Grey has died more tiems than GI Joe’s Duke has gone into a coma. The only dead person in all of comics is Gwen Stacy, hell they’ve even brought back Bucky and Jason Todd back from the dead (granted both companies have done a great job with it). Despite Dick growing up Bruce Wayne is still 29. Comic time is different from any other. As comic book fans we accept that time is squishy, and if the biggest change that is made is that he jumps from
Dick Greyson isn’t an interesting charecter till he became Robin/Nightwing. At least Clark Kent was Kal El before he put on the tights. American’s need to acept the merits of a good Mini Series. It’s something that we’ve lost in the last decade or so. Remember Roots? Ok neither do I as I was negative 3 when it aired.
I think the idea of a Nightwing series is brilliant. After all, if you just focus on Dick Grayson before his parents were killed, you’ve got a show about a kid in the circus that happens to have the same name as somebody from the Batman universe.
Another point in favor of the Nightwing series is you are practically GIVEN a main character that the CW tries to focus on anyway; angst-filled young adult with relationship issues, lots of money, and a chip on his shoulder/something to prove.
