With a new federal decision that Jailbreaking your Apple device is completely legal, we now have a better way to do it as well! The fine folks at the iPhone Dev Team have made “Jailbreak Me 2.0 (Star)” which will unlock any and all iOS device with firmware 3.2 or greater. From there, it’s a hop skip and jump from performing a full sim-unlock and use your device on any carrier.
To unlock your phone, it’s a simple matter of being able to type a web-address and then have all the patience in the world. Point your Safari browser to http://jailbreakme.com and follow the one single instruction. Yes. That’s it. At least, that’s what people are telling me, because their servers are now so swamped with incoming requests that my phone can’t even see the site anymore!
UPDATE: After hitting retry for quite a many times, I finally found a way to get my systems to update.
- Put your device into Airplane Mode.
- Goto Settings>Safari> Accept All Cookies, Clear Cache/Cookies/History.
- If you have iOS 4.x, make sure Safari isn’t running in the background by double clicking the home button and closing any running instances there.
- Get out of Airplane Mode.
- Goto your Wireless network under Settings>Wifi> and hit the big blue arrow next to it. Scroll down to the DNS and enter in Google’s public DNS 8.8.8.8
- Relaunch Safari and goto http://jailbreakme.modmyi.com
- Have fun!
There are some problems with Jailbroken apps right now. The biggest one is that many apps aren’t built to run with iOS4 because no one was able to break an iOS4 device until today. Apps can still run fine on iOS3.2 (iPad), but then most of them were built for the phone and aren’t iPad native. Overall, though, this was very simple and effective. Glad I was able to five it a whirl!
