How do I explain this to someone who wouldn’t immediately know what I’m talking about? Let’s see . . .
Um, so you know Firefly? The guy who made that, Joss Whedon, also made Dr Horrible’s Sing-Along-Blog. One of the actors in Dr Horrible was Felicia Day, who also has her own web-series called “The Guild”. The show is available online, on iTunes, and Xbox Live and is a humorous look at the real life misadventures of a bunch of guild-mates who all play an unnamed MMO. And somehow, this all connects to Kevin Bacon (obscure joke there).
Well, Joss has also just finished directing Ms. Day again in her new music video called “Would You Like To Date My Avatar”. If you have any inkling as to what that means, you’ll find it hilarious. If you don’t, it’s still a humorous video!
If you aren’t familiar with The Onion News Network, it’s a spoof news agency. That’s the very short version. They started out as a weekly, subscription based newspaper that could be delivered to your mailbox for a small fee. Once the internet came into its own, you could log into their site for the articles. Now, you get full videos and an actual news desk.
Typically, their articles are very witty and sharp. If you don’t know what’s really going on in the world today, you aren’t likely to get the jokes in their mocking stories.
Of course, sometimes their articles can be more believable than the real news! Looking over at CNN’s Technology section, you’d think you had gone to The Onion’s site instead:
Lab makes renewable deisel fuel from E Coli poop: huh?
Last night I achieved a great moment in my young geek life. In the game World of Warcraft I achieved level 70. I’m sure that all, if not most, of you know that 70 is the current highest level in the game. While there is still much to do, I have hit the level cap.
This brings me to an interesting situation. In the normal world no one cares. If I had completed an album, or finished a painting, I could expect some type of public bragging rights if I were to share this with most of the people in my life. However as video games are still viewed by the general population as “child’s thing” it is not the same.
