After everything that has been revealed so far, I really want to like Star Wars: the Old Republic. I want to be excited for it to be released. It’s just that I keep having this nagging feeling about it that I can’t shake.
Let me preface this: I’ve never been an MMO fan. I don’t like investing a ridiculous amount of time into a never-ending game only to get repeatedly pawned by some snot-nosed teenager in Shanghai with way too much time on his hands. But my general dislike of MMOs aside, I’m just not sure what to think of this game.
I saw this video last week but it had been taken down due to “copyright infringement” so I was never able to actually watch it. I found a new version which will hopefully survive long enough for those of you who haven’t heard Jake Lloyd talk about how The Phantom Menace still affects his life to this day.
If I bumped into him on the street, I like to think that I wouldn’t punch him and then say something like “YIPEEE!” but I don’t think I can promise that. Really though, this kid has had a rough life. He’s been the punching bag for those who get tired of beating up on Jar Jar Binks when in reality, he was just playing a character that happened to be cursed with really crappy dialog. Stupid George Lucas and his brain that fell out of his ear…
As most of you probably know this week is the Electronic Entertainment Expo, E3 for short. This time of year brings a huge amount of gaming news for all the latest and greatest games to come. Rather than link all of the awesome videos, and I assure you there are many (just keep reading if you doubt), I recommend you regularly check http://www.g4tv.com/thefeed/blog/index.html for all the latest news. In no particular order I’m going to talk a bit about some of the amazing things that have been announced so far. I’ll try to add new posts after each days news hits. Since it’s midday Teusday this will include all of the stuff from day 1, and some of day 2.
There is a new model of the PSP coming with a slide up screen. Yeah I know, I don’t care either but it’s as good a place as any to start
New Trailer for Star Wars: The Old Republic just came out.
I get that the universe of Star Wars seems to endure the same cycle of power all the time, and that the same battles just get waged over and over again, but don’t you think this looks a little . . . old? In KOTOR things looked different; ships looked like a different design, clothing looked like a different style, droids seemed slightly less advanced. It was a long time before the movie series, so they had to make it look like it!
Supposedly this happens in the same era . . . so why do the capital ships all look like Star Destroyers? Why are the fighters all TIEs? Why does the shuttle look EXACTLY as it did in the prequels? As awesome and utterly kick-ass as that trailer is, it just feels like “Star Wars: We Don’t Have to Pay People For Their Likeness” and not “Star Wars: The Old Republic”.
On a recent cruise vacation up the coast of the Western United States I found myself in Seattle WA. After the normal visits to the Space Needle, and Pike’s Place market, we found ourselves back at the Seattle Center. While there we found an incredible building. It was the Science Fiction Museum and Hall of Fame. They had numerous authentic, and replica, pieces of memorabilia from throughout the history of Sci-Fi. Despite their lack of Doctor Who it is a must for any geek.
Who doesn’t like to hit their local cantina first thing Saturday morning? I know that I do. Especially when it’s the Star Wars cantina and there’s a great parody of Barry Manilow’s Copacabana. This song has been around for a few years but I’ve never seen it set to high-quality MS Paint graphics and Flash animation.
Why are geeks interested in the James Bond movies?
Duh!!
1- Girls
2- Gadgets
3- Guns
4- Spanish Inquisition (whoops, sorry I didn’t expect that)
5- Style
James Bond is a badass. He’s a badass that has kewl toys, gets the girls and blows up a lot of things in style. One moment Sean Connery has a duck on his head swimming through the water, the next he’s in a tuxedo. And that tuxedo probably has more devices imbedded in it than my cell phone.
For years we’ve heard rumors about a third installment in the Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic series. After a while, these rumors evolved into rumors of a KOTOR MMO. Now it appears that there is starting to be some basis for these rumors. I present the following as evidence.
On July 3, 2008, Star Wars: The Old Republic,Star Wars: Sagas, and Star Wars: Legends were all registered by LucasFilm Licensing with the United States Patent and Trademark Office. Nothing too special in an of itself. These could relate to just about anything out there: books, comics, etc. But when combined with information that Portfolio.com is reporting, things get very intriguing.
N. Evan Van Zelfden in Los Angeles warns, watch out World of Warcraft. In an interview at E3 this week, Electronic Arts chief executive John Riccitiello said that EA is working on the next version of Star Wars game Knights of the Old Republic, and it will most certainly have a massively multiplayer online component to it.
You knew this was going to happen. If you say that you didn’t, then you’re either a fool or a liar. I just found this on StarWars.com:
Returning to store shelves on November 4th are the six episodes of the Star Wars saga on DVD bundled in convenient trilogy sets. Perfect for gift-giving as the holidays approach, the Prequel Trilogy set includes Episodes I-III, while the Star Wars Trilogy includes Episodes IV-VI.
Fans who already own the prequel trilogy double-disc releases (released from 2001-2005) and the Star Wars trilogy double-disc releases (released in 2006) already have all the content that’s available in this set. There’s nothing new in this set you don’t already have. But for friends and family still looking to fill in these gaps in their DVD collections, these sets make it easy and affordable to complete the saga.
