Let me preface this “letter” to you first by letting you know that I do not plan on voting for you in the 2008 Presidential Elections.  I respect your service to our country, even when I don’t always agree with it, and hope you continue to serve in whatever way you feel prudent and/or capable.

I went into this last weekend very upset with you and your campaign, with the smears and racially-tinged insults you’ve been throwing around at rallies.  I, myself, have grown up as an “outsider” in my own community simply because I have a funny name and am not white.  It’s hard to understand what that’s like if you haven’t lived it yourself, and I’m afraid I don’t have the necessary skills to really convey to you (or anyone else) just how much it hurts.  I’m half-Japanese, with a semi-traditional name.  I don’t speak Japanese.  I don’t know kung-fu.  Yes, I know I’m tall.  No, not all Japanese men are 4foot11.  I’m not Hispanic either.  I’m not “an Arab”.  I’m just not white.

As a fan of a lot of Sci-Fi shows, I end up joining various fan clubs. Of course I run the USS Ticonderoga fan club for Star Trek. I’ve been involved in various clubs for Star Wars, Doctor Who, Firefly and others. One of these is the Visitors Fifth Column, a fan club of the various V mini-series and television series. Today the leader of the local chapter directed me towards a Variety report announcing that ABC would be producing a re-image of the V story. Warner Brothers TV will be producing the show.

It comes as no shock my close friends that I don’t have any sort of allegiance to any one political party.  I view politics the same way I view professional sports; just because I might like something that one person does, does not mean I want to be a die-hard fan of theirs or the team they’re on.  This does give me a somewhat unique viewpoint when talking with my politically minded friends, as I’m not bound by any sort of unspoken oath of fealty to either major party.

At the Republican convention

I have to admit that I’m a huge Sarah Palin fan.  Ever since I heard that she was going to sue over the decision to list the polar bear as endangered, I’ve been a fan.

When I heard that John McCain had decided to pick Governor Palin as his running mate, I was elated.  Then I heard her acceptance speech.  What’s more than elated?  Whatever it is, that’s what I was.  And then she spoke at the Republican National Convention last night.

I don’t know if it’s possible for me to be more impressed with this woman.  She appears to be a true conservative that doesn’t like big government.  She also says that we need to start domestic drilling which shows me that she has a grasp on the impending energy crisis that the country is facing.  Add to all of that, she’s not from Washington.  In fact, she’s about as far from outside of the beltway as I can imagine.  I like that.

After last weeks Democratic convention I became motivated. Motivated to register, and to vote. To actually learn more about what is going on in the world around me. Then the morning after Senator Barack Obama’s acceptance speech another bombshell was dropped. The Republicans, the Grand Old Party of old white men named a 44 year old 1st term Alaskan Governor as the Vice Presidential nominee to a man who is 72 years old, and has had cancer. Granted it was skin cancer, but cancer is cancer.
