Want Some Prizes?

Our live show is tomorrow night!  I don’t mind telling every one that I’m a little terrified of trying to broadcast out to our audience without the chance to edit.  We’re going to do our best for you, however, to make this as painless as possible.

In an effort to do so, here is our broadcast schedule and instructions for hearing us live and join in the chat.

Goto TrekRadio.net and join the IRC chat under “Community” (link here) and choose a username to be identified with.  Be sure to click “Play” at the top to hear what’s currently being broadcast.

Showtime is:

8PM Pacific Time

9PM Mountain Time

10PM Central Time

11PM Eastern Time

Now, to make this really worth it we have worked out some prizes for everyone.  In order to win them, you need to do three things:

  1. Like us on Facebook (it’s ok if you have done this previously)
  2. Follow us on Twitter (again, see above)
  3. Send an email to [email protected] with answers to the following questions:
  • What major company have we single-handedly killed?
  • Where did “Sausage” come from and why?
  • When did the “Wormhole” first come into the picture?

If you don’t know the actual answers, fear not! We will also accept humorous substitutions (just make them entertaining and we’ll count them).

Winners will be announced LIVE on the air, so be sure to be tuning in to claim your prizes!

Marvel Movies: Assemble!

Do you have what it takes to sit in a movie theater and watch six movies?  I know that I do, but I’m a computer nerd by trade so sitting is what I do best.  If you also think that you have what it takes, then you’ll probably be interested to know that your local AMC movie theater may be hosting and event called The Ultimate Marvel Marathon in which six Marvel films will be shown back-to-back-to-back-to… Well, you get the point.  What does your $40 get you?  Here is the list:

  • Iron Man
  • The Incredible Hulk
  • Iron Man 2
  • Thor in 3D
  • Captain America in 3D
  • The Avengers in 3D

As of right now, only 10 cities have been listed as participating in this epic event, but more cities will be announced on March 16th.  You can find out of your city is on the list by going here.

I would love to be able to take part in this but, my city isn’t on the list.  Yet.  What are your thoughts?  Is this something that you would pay $40 on?

It’s About Time

After years of waiting, EA has announced that SimCity will make its triumphant return in 2013. This time, with 3D graphics and curved roads! For those of you who love this franchise, this comes as extremely welcome news. And for those of you who played SimCity Societies, I understand that you may be concerned that this will be a buggy mess that is virtually unplayable. Thankfully, EA has people who worked on SimCity 2000 and SimCity 4 working on the game. 2013 cannot get here fast enough.

Meet The Governor

WARNING! THIS POST IS LADEN WITH SPOILERS. IF YOU DON’T WANT YOUR WALKING DEAD VIEWING EXPERIENCE RUINED, MOVE ALONG.  THERE IS NOTHING FOR YOU TO SEE HERE.

If you’ve read The Walking Dead comics, then you should be familiar with The Governor.  If you aren’t familiar with this character, you should know that he is one of the best villains in all of comic books.  No, he’s not better than the Joker, but he’s up there.  As far as twisted and evil goes, this guy is near the top of the list.

Fans of The Walking Dead television show have been waiting on news to see who would be cast as this epic character pretty much since the third episode of the first season.  While there were a lot of fans of the mindset that Merle would turn out to be The Governor, the announcement that David Morrissey has been cast shattered the hopes and dreams of fans everywhere who were hoping that Merle would exact his revenge for being handcuffed to that roof in Atlanta.

Knowing that this bit of casting has been finalized for next season tells us a lot.  Specifically, it tells us that Rick and his band of survivors will likely be setting up camp at the prison and that they’ll be discovering the community of Woodbury.  This is a huge story line where we get to see a lot of development with the characters. I’m very happy that it’s going to be included in the show.

Also, the Woodbury scenes in the comic with The Governor were tough to read.  (They’re pretty messed up.)  I’m very excited to see how they’ll play out on television.

A Bad Idea?

Just because something was successful 25 years ago, doesn’t mean that it needs to be remade or revisited. Are you listening to me, George Lucas?  Sometimes something comes along that is so well done that it needs to be left as it is so that future generations can appreciate it for what it was.

George Lucas managed to tarnish the Star Wars legacy by releasing prequel films that many consider to be mediocre at best, atrocious at worst. In addition, he’s made his original films shadows of their former selves.  Now, DC Comics is tempting fate and releasing prequel stories to what many consider to be one of the best books of all time, Watchmen.  (Yes, I said books. Watchmen is so good that it was the only graphic novel to appear on Time‘s 2005 “All-TIME 100 Greatest Novels” list.)

For those who haven’t heard, this morning, DC Comics officially announced what many knew was coming when they shouted to the world that Before Watchmen was going to be unleashed upon us this summer.  You can read their words here, but let me sum it up for you.

“We want money.  Watchmen is an important piece of comic book, and literary, history but since we want money, we’re going to crap on that history and reboot it similar to what we did last year with our entire company.  Suck on that Alan Moore, you crazy old warlock.”

Moore’s response?

Mythbusters Are Coming!

For those who are unaware, the Mythbusters, specifically Jamie Hyneman  and Adam Savage, are coming to Salt Lake City tonight to perform a live show to a sold-out audience.  I was among those fortunate enough to get tickets.  As a result, I was also fortunate(?) to be interviewed by The Daily Utah Chronicle regarding the show.  It’s not just me in the article so I thought that it would be good to share with you, our regular readers.

Adam Savage and Jamie Hyneman are best known for hosting the hit television show “Mythbusters.” They will bring the same theatrical stunts and experiments to Kingsbury Hall for a sold-out live performance tonight.

“This performance will capture the spirit of everything that the Mythbusters do,” said Bruce Grantham, marketing officer for Magicspace Entertainment.

This is the duo’s second trip to Salt Lake City, when they also spoke in front of a sold-out crowd. For previous tours, “Mythbusters Live” was in a lecture format, but this year’s tour has live demonstrations and audience participation.

The night will feature special effects, music and a Q-and-A session after the show, Grantham said. He said he did not want to reveal specifics because “the surprise is the exciting part.”

“ ‘Mythbusters’ appeals to me because of the scientific aspect,” said Jeremiah Zohner, a Davis County resident. “I also like to see stuff blow up — it’s good entertainment.”

Zohner said he has been watching “Mythbusters” since the first season, but has never seen the Mythbusters during a live performance and wants to see how Hyneman acts off camera. He would be thrilled to get picked to participate, he said.

The tour began Friday and is working its way across the country. After the performance in Salt Lake City, the duo will move to Arizona, then California.

The performance takes place at Kingsbury Hall at 7:30 p.m.

Steve Jobs 1955-2011

“No one wants to die. Even people who want to go to heaven don’t want to die to get there. And yet death is the destination we all share. No one has ever escaped it. And that is as it should be, because Death is very likely the single best invention of Life. It is Life’s change agent. It clears out the old to make way for the new. Right now the new is you, but someday not too long from now, you will gradually become the old and be cleared away. Sorry to be so dramatic, but it is quite true.

Your time is limited, so don’t waste it living someone else’s life. Don’t be trapped by dogma — which is living with the results of other people’s thinking. Don’t let the noise of others’ opinions drown out your own inner voice. And most important, have the courage to follow your heart and intuition. They somehow already know what you truly want to become. Everything else is secondary.”  – Steve Jobs

Netflix Must Hate Their Shareholders

Yesterday, Reed Hastings, the co-founder and CEO of Netflix sent an apology to all those Netflix subscribers that have been pissed off and alienated over the past few months.  I actually thought that it would be good but it turned out to be “We screwed up… blah blah blah… pricing structure… blah blah blah… we’re splitting our company… blah blah blah… we really aren’t sorry.”  OK.  So I paraphrased a bit, but that’s the jist of it.  All it seemed to do is make those who chose to keep paying for the service angry and those who left, even more satisfied with their decision to leave.

I thought about posting the whole “apology” but then I found this which sums it up nicely.

Are you still riding the Netflix bandwagon? Will you make the jump to Qwikster?

A Disturbance In The Force

In the famous words of Obi-Wan Kenobi, “I felt a great disturbance in the Force, as if millions of voices suddenly cried out in terror and were suddenly silenced. I fear something terrible has happened.” He’s right. And since Alderaan has already been destroyed, we are safe in assuming that George Lucas is messing with Star Wars yet again.

In our last podcast, we discussed some of the changes that Lucas is making to Episode I, specifically, replacing the horrible Yoda puppet with CGI.  I have no problem with that because that puppet looked horrible.  Absolutely horrible…  I also don’t have the same feelings towards the prequel trilogy that I do for the original trilogy so it’s easier for me to let changes that actually improve the films slide.  The original trilogy however has been messed with quite enough thank you.  Unfortunately not all of those changes have made the movies better.

When it was announced that all six Star Wars  films would be available on Blu-Ray, everyone knew that changes would be made.  I think that everyone assumed that these changes would be mostly technical and not-so-secretly hoped that we’d get to see wampas in Echo Base or the sandstorm on Tatooine.  Instead we get Obi-Wan Kenobi performing his rendition of the Wilhelm scream and blinking ewoks. If that’s not enough, we also get Darth Vader being further pussified.

I hate George Lucas so much right now. If anybody happens to come across him today, please punch him the back of the head for me.
