The other day I was putting gas in the car at the station. Ahead of me was a guy who couldn’t be more than an hour past 19 years old with his stereo blaring, truck still running, and yelling and laughing with his friends.
While this child was being a public nuisance (yes, I know I sound old here, but give it a second), he’s also trying to light a cigarette. Normally that’s a stupid thing to do at a gas pump. This time it was especially stupid. Wanna see why?
See, in older trucks like his the fuel door isn’t down around your thigh. It’s up at chest height, aimed at your face. Thanks to the fact he has his engine running while doing this, there’s a lot of gas fumes coming back out of the tank and up towards him trying to light one up to impress his friend. Thankfully (for me, anyway), the right ratio of gas to air never seemed to be reached and we didn’t all die.
I saw this on TV awhile ago, and always meant to post about it but never got around to it. Today, however, was such a beautiful day that I thought I’d sit down in front of my computer in our dark basement office and blog.
I’ve seen a few more pieces of video and screenshots come out about this game, and from a graphics standpoint I’m pretty impressed. From how this guy is describing it, though, I’d have to say the developers are idiots. Fans of this blog will remember that I play a game called Eve: Online. I’ve played other MMO’s as well, and have been playing video games for quite some time. It should be no surprise then that my “BS Detector” was going off like crazy through that video. Let me see if I can remember all his big selling points to the game:
No, not really. I just know that this particular post is going to grate some people (and possibly an entire state) the wrong way. In the end, I realize that everyone is entitled to their own opinion: It is my opinion that I am always right! :-D
Things have been really busy lately. I mean really, really busy; moving half the network to a new location at work while moving buildings at the same time, finals are due in school, kids will be kids, and life in general all seem to get in the way of all the things we thought were most important. I’ve only been able to give my games the briefest amount of time, I’ve gone entire weeks without checking my webcomics, and I haven’t caught up on news for quite awhile.
A couple weeks ago my little girl turned the big 1 year old. As is customary, we went and had some pictures taken at the local portrait studio. She was a real trooper and we got some really nice pictures of her with varied props and outfits. The photographer was really nice and you could tell she was familiar with working with babies by how well she handled ours. When our session was over, we waited in the front room for our proofs to be done.
Now, I remember going with my family to Olan Mills for our family portrait when I was 10 or so. We probably only got 4 shots taken, and my mom had to go back a week later to look at the proofs. It’s quite amazing how digital photography has changed the scene when it comes to getting your family portraits done. But what’s really annoying is how the sales strategy haven’t.
Given the recent headlines, you may think that this is going to be a post on the economic crisis that our country is facing. Well, you’re wrong. However, what I say in this post can be related to the problems that our economic and housing sectors are going through because the root problems are the same: greed and corruption.
I actually want to tell you about a recent experience with a more corrupt than typical auto dealership. If you ever check out my personal blog, you may know that I had a Dodge Colt with almost 200,000 miles that finally died. Because of it’s very predictable death, I had to buy a new car. If you weren’t aware of those facts, now you are.
This is an amazing time in the technological world. For the first time in presidential elections, the internet allows you to fact-check almost as soon as the words are out of the candidate’s mouth. No more can politicians say something really dumb and then try and deny it was ever said (since the mp3, YouTube clip, and numerous Twitters have spread it across the web). Public records are not only available to the public, they are finally accessible!
And, like with everything else that hits a massive surge, we have moronic advertisers who try and cash in on it. That in itself isn’t so bad (hey, it’s capitalism!). What’s bad is the fact that they try and do it with automated scripts.
I made a claim once in our forums that the fastest way to kill a show was to put it on the CW. When UPN and WB combined, they somehow managed to open the portal and allow Gozer to come into our world.
In their latest attempt to screw up people who have no business even thinking about superheroes, they are creating a show about Dick Grayson . . . before he knew Bruce Wayne.
Holy prequel, Boy Wonder, the CW is prepping a series based on Batman sidekick Robin’s pre-Caped Crusader days.
The old song goes “Video Killed The Radio Star”. It was the very first music video shown by MTV in 1981, and it’s a classic. But it’s inaccurate.
I submit to you the following question: When did modern pop music turn to crap?
Now, of course the answer is going to vary from person to person depending, in large, to personal musical preferences. But I’d like to say that pop music died as soon as music label companies thought they could get us to like whatever they thought we should, instead of finding what we DID like and just making it more accessible.
This post was supposed to go in a different direction entirely. I was going to write about how I missed all the great suburban rap artists that I grew up with as a kid and how catchy their music was. These guys made music for white kids selling lemonade to enjoy. It wasn’t hard core gangster rap, and that was OK; at the time the “harder” artists had their own niche to fill and they did well, too.
And it’d help greatly if you are dumb enough to believe anything you hear.
We have a radio station here in our state that typically plays your normal fare of “90’s and now” programming that is so popular everywhere. I will occasionally listen to it when I’m surfing through the stations, but I don’t really follow it as much as I do my favorite one. I hadn’t really listened to it before at night, until I was driving down to the gas station the other evening.
John Tesh has a radio show that broadcasts at night on this station. I sort of knew that it was there, but hadn’t ever really paid any attention to it until my gas run the other night. Billed as “Intelligence for Your Life”, it’s a syndicated program (that sounds like it was recorded in his basement, “unibomber-style”) designed to educate people with little factoids that he finds interesting.
My aunt is a really funny lady; she has a wonderful personality and a great sense of humor. She’s also smart enough to know when she’s doing something wrong vs. when something just isn’t working. She sent me an email and invited me to post it here.
