If you ever get a chance, you should check out Ctrl+Alt+Del Comics.  It’s typically a nice gamer-centric strip, but every once in awhile they do just a page of artwork that isn’t really related to anything in the story.  Today’s was one of those!

MarvelYourUniverse_CoverAccording to the New York Times, Disney has made a bid to purchase Marvel Comics for $4 billion.

Walt Disney Company said Monday it has agreed to buy Marvel Entertainment, the storied comic book company that owns the rights to such popular characters as Spider-Man and and the Fantastic Four, in a cash and stock deal it valued at $4 billion. The deal comes more than 10 years after Marvel was at the center of a bruising and highly public takeover battle between two feisty financiers.

Shareholders at Marvel will need to approve the transaction, which boards of directors at both companies have already approved.

In 1993 my dad gave me three copies of Superman #75.  Two of these were the “black bag” variant that contained assorted goodies and a variant cover all encased in a black poly bag with a bleeding Superman logo on the front.  The third copy was the widely available basic newsstand version.  In addition to the individual issues, he also gave me The Death of Superman trade paperback which contained the 11 comics detailing the entire Death of Superman storyline.  Growing up, I was always been a fan of comic books but I hadn’t read them with any sort of regularity since I was in grade school so I was a bit surprised by this present but I was still grateful and excited nonetheless.  Little did my dad know that his seemingly simple gift would send me down the long path to becoming a comic book geek.

So let me come right out and say it, there is a lot of digital blue penis in The Watchmen. Doctor Manhattan, one the stars of the film, is a man made of energy who is naked for almost the entire movie. For a small time he’s in human form, and when out on a mission sports a banana hammock. I’ll be honest that I felt a little uncomfortable seeing a flaccid blue dong on the IMAX screen repeatedly.

Right now that’s out of the way, on to the review.

I love comic books and I love movies so naturally, I’m a big fan of movies based on comic books.  There is no doubt that this summer was enough to make many a geek wet themselves with delight.

Talk to the hand

Talk to the hand

The summer started off with a giant crimson and gold bang as Iron Man dominated theaters to the tune of $318,219,154.  Not too bad for a movie about a dysfunctional millionaire with a really cool suit.  Despite the fact that I think that Tony Stark is a giant douche bag in the comics, especially after Marvel’s Civil War, there’s no doubt that Robert Downey Jr. was flat out amazing.  Throw in a nice cameo by Samuel L. Jackson as Nick Fury that set up the upcoming Avengers project, and this provided much geek glee.

Ever since I saw the ending of Batman Begins where we are shown a playing card with a joker on it, I have been highly anticipating this sequel in the Batman franchise.  I am a huge fan of the Batman comics and have always thought that the Joker was one of the best villains.  Now we have a movie that pits the madness of the Joker against the madness of the Batman.  What’s not to get excited about?  (Yes, I know that Tim Burton did the Batman vs. Joker thing back in 1989.  I was excited for it back then too.)

The Dark Knight is probably the best movie based on a comic book that I have ever seen.  There was so much that was good about it that what was bad is inconsequential.  Here are a few of my thoughts on the movie.  Warning!  Minor spoilers ahead!

LA Daily News reports that X-Men executive producer Lauren Shuler Donner is currently working on the cast for a 4th installment in the movie franchise. Renegotiations would be needed to secure the main stars of the previous three films.

Donner says “The newer cast members are signed, and the older cast members are not.” Considering the older names involved — Halle Berry, Hugh Jackman, Rebecca Romijn, Famke Janssen and Anna Paquin — that could run into a huge chunk of money.

All that’s putting the cart before the wolverine, of course, since Hugh Jackman is set to reprise his role as the manicure-challenged mutant superhero in his own film. “Next, we’re going to do ‘Wolverine,’ but not before the end of the year because he’s in the Baz Luhrmann film,” she says of the film maker’s untitled Australian epic with Nicole Kidman. However, “We have the script and are working on it.”

For as big of a geek as I am, I’m not very excited for the new Incredible Hulk movie. The first one was such a disappointment that I could really care less about the sequel. Or retelling. Whatever…

Anyway, I haven’t been very excited until yesterday when I saw new footage starring none other than Tony Stark himself. Personally, I think that Tony Stark is a huge douche but I loved Iron Man. I thought that Robert Downey, Jr. was amazing. The fact that he makes a cameo in this movie makes me actually want to go see it. How sad is it that I’m more excited to go see a character that I don’t like than the movie itself?

I tried to embed the video here but appear to be technically retarded today.  Go here to check it out for yourself.

I may be weird, but I have just played one of the funniest games since Lego Star Wars and that is Lego Indiana Jones. The game play in this is great. You have to find shovels to dig things up and wrenches to repair certain vehicles before you can use them. The controls handle just as smoothly as the previous Lego games. You can unlock a playable character from the Star Wars game, Han Solo. The game follows all 3 of the original movies. With how much I am loving this game, I am even more thrilled about their next Lego game: Lego Batman.

I’ve been bad about keeping things up to date on the blog.  If not for Zohner posting some things, last week would have gone by without a single update.  I’ve decided before I post anything else, I’d give a real quick list of things that I feel should have been posted about.  Prepare for randomness!
