Part of me wants to be cynical and say that this won’t be as revolutionary as the first.  Of course, there’s the other 80% of me that’s beating that part over the head and burying it in the desert.

If you ever get a chance, you should check out Ctrl+Alt+Del Comics.  It’s typically a nice gamer-centric strip, but every once in awhile they do just a page of artwork that isn’t really related to anything in the story.  Today’s was one of those!

Behold:  This Is How The World Ends!

Apple announced their iPad yesterday, a tablet-sized version of the iPhone. Other than the unfortunate name, it is an amazing little device. Considering how quickly we all got over the Nintendo Revolution becoming the “Wii”, I think we’ll forgive Apple soon enough.

If you remember my post Friday, I laid out some of the ways Apple could screw up such a product. I’d like to visit some of those points again and compare how they did.

  • I mentioned I was worried they’d try and use parts from the MacBook Air (system board, screen, chassis, battery). Thankfully they didn’t even try. The battery life is supposed to be able to play video for up to 10 hours, and standby is rated to last a month. To be sure, the thing was probably in airplane mode (with all radios turned off) and screen brightness was way down, but it’s still better than the 4 hours I get on my laptop.

Furthering my belief that tomorrow’s Mass Effect 2 is actually an interactive movie . . . here’s an interview with the stars.  And there are a lot of them!

Mass Effect 2 launches tomorrow.  I’m excited in ways you can’t even understand.  The first Mass Effect was one of those games that came onto the scene and really changed the way you played the RPG genre.  BioWare took what work they had done on Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic and just blew everything out of the water with it.

Ideally, I’d show you the launch video for the original game, but since the only one I can find has it disabled, I’ll just link it instead.

Of course, the game also had it’s share of controversy; some whacko at Fox News made claims in the media that the game was actually “An Alien Rape Simulator”.  Despite the fact that every person who ever played the game could attest that it was not and numerous experts in the field all tried to correct Fox, they have yet to retract their statements.  It didn’t keep the game from being awesome, though.

On January 27th, 2010, Apple Inc is poised to introduce to the world the new iSlate which will change the computing world. Or it might be the iTouch. Or iTablet. Or iCostsomuchyouwanttopuke. We really don’t know. Of course, they were also “going” to do this last year too. The fact is, we don’t know what we’re getting, when we’re getting it, what it’ll do, what it’ll cost, or what it’ll be called. If it is a tablet (and most every market analyst is falling over themselves to say it is), it’s going to be big.

Head on over to Gizmodo’s collection of Apple Tablet Rumors to get a feel for whats being talked about.

My only worry is that Apple might make some of the same mistakes Microsoft made when moving to the tablet. I also worry they might try to hang to some of their existing hardware. Below is my list of ways Apple could possibly screw this up:

When it comes to strategy games, the Total War series has never ceased to innovate and impress. Developed by the Creative Assembly, Total War is a franchise rife with great games: Shogun, Medieval, Rome, Medieval II, Empire. Each installment in the series has pushed the limits of the genre. Now the Creative Assembly has announced their latest project: Napoleon.

Watch the trailer below, and you’ll understand just exactly why all of Europe was terrified of a diminutive upstart Frenchman.

Napoleon: Total War is apparently being created in lieu of an expansion for its predecessor, Empire: Total War, and will be using a souped-up version of the latter’s engine. Empire was known for its awesome visual effects, stunning naval battles and the unheard of use of motion capture animation for every single soldier on the battlefield.

After everything that has been revealed so far, I really want to like Star Wars: the Old Republic. I want to be excited for it to be released. It’s just that I keep having this nagging feeling about it that I can’t shake.

Let me preface this: I’ve never been an MMO fan. I don’t like investing a ridiculous amount of time into a never-ending game only to get repeatedly pawned by some snot-nosed teenager in Shanghai with way too much time on his hands. But my general dislike of MMOs aside, I’m just not sure what to think of this game.

How do I explain this to someone who wouldn’t immediately know what I’m talking about?  Let’s see . . .

Um, so you know Firefly?  The guy who made that, Joss Whedon, also made Dr Horrible’s Sing-Along-Blog.  One of the actors in Dr Horrible was Felicia Day, who also has her own web-series called “The Guild”.  The show is available online, on iTunes, and Xbox Live and is a humorous look at the real life misadventures of a bunch of guild-mates who all play an unnamed MMO.  And somehow, this all connects to Kevin Bacon (obscure joke there).

Well, Joss has also just finished directing Ms. Day again in her new music video called “Would You Like To Date My Avatar”.  If you have any inkling as to what that means, you’ll find it hilarious.  If you don’t, it’s still a humorous video!

Enjoy!

I would apologize for posting yet another video clip instead of my thoughts on any number of geeky topics; however, this is the best thing you’ll see today.  I haven’t seen G.I. Joe: Rise of Cobra yet, although I most eventually will, but I know for a fact that there is no way that can hope to be as awesome as The Ballad of G.I. Joe courtesy of the fine folks over at Funny or Die.  Thanks to this all-star cast, which includes Zach Galifiankais as Snow Job and Olivia Wilde as The Baroness, we now know what the Joes and Cobra do when the day is done.  Who knew that Destro played the clarinet?
