Sharing Is Not Piracy

Just because somebody says something, doesn’t make it so.

(From MakeUseOf)

A Bad Idea?

Just because something was successful 25 years ago, doesn’t mean that it needs to be remade or revisited. Are you listening to me, George Lucas?  Sometimes something comes along that is so well done that it needs to be left as it is so that future generations can appreciate it for what it was.

George Lucas managed to tarnish the Star Wars legacy by releasing prequel films that many consider to be mediocre at best, atrocious at worst. In addition, he’s made his original films shadows of their former selves.  Now, DC Comics is tempting fate and releasing prequel stories to what many consider to be one of the best books of all time, Watchmen.  (Yes, I said books. Watchmen is so good that it was the only graphic novel to appear on Time‘s 2005 “All-TIME 100 Greatest Novels” list.)

For those who haven’t heard, this morning, DC Comics officially announced what many knew was coming when they shouted to the world that Before Watchmen was going to be unleashed upon us this summer.  You can read their words here, but let me sum it up for you.

“We want money.  Watchmen is an important piece of comic book, and literary, history but since we want money, we’re going to crap on that history and reboot it similar to what we did last year with our entire company.  Suck on that Alan Moore, you crazy old warlock.”

Moore’s response?

Choosing An Online Storage Service

Some things in this world are easy.  For example, if you have the choice between playing Skyrim or Farmville, there is really no other choice but to play Skyrim.  It’s superior in every way except for it’s inability to annoy all of your friends every time a cow wanders onto your farm.  Of course, in Skyrim, you could kill the cow and make armor from its hide.  Just more evidence that Skyrim is better.

Some things, however, are not so simple.  For instance, what is your best option when it comes to online storage?  Well, it depends on what you are looking for.  Do you want to pay for space or do you want it to be free?  Do you need more space than is available for free?  Do you need complete backup services with the storage or do you just want someplace to stick a few files that’s not on your local computer?  There are a lot of things to consider when you are choosing an online storage service.  Thankfully, there is now a way that you can see what is out there, how much it costs, and whether or not it is what you want: Top10CloudStorage.com.

It’s been a while since I’ve reviewed anything here at StolenDroids so I thought I’d take a few minutes and tell you about Top10CloudStorage.com.  This is a site that I happened to come across this morning in my daily surfing of the web and I’m glad that I did because they provide an awesome service: knowledge.  And best of all, their knowledge is shared with you at no charge!  What’s better than free knowledge?  Free knowledge that you don’t need to work for.

These guys have basically taken it upon themselves to rate and review the top cloud storage servers, cloud storage providers, online backup providers, and cloud sync services.  Granted, there are some companies which fall under more than one category, but they have been rated and reviewed based on each specific category under which they fall.  Now, if you want to know if Dropox is your best option for your online storage needs, you can compare it, head-to-head with other providers, such as Mozy or ZipCloud.  Should you use Carbonite or MyPCBackup for your off-site backups?  Who knows?  I’ll tell you who knows: the guys over at Top10CloudStorage.com, and they are more than happy to tell you which service they think is the best option.

With comprehensive reviews, including reviews from users, Top10CloudStorage.com is a great resource when it comes to choosing storage and backup services in the cloud.  I understand that not everyone is in need of online storage services, but the way that the Internet is going, there will come a time when you need to know what your options are.  I recommend that you check out  them out so that you can make the most well-informed decision. Who knows? Maybe it’ll even get you a promotion at work.

Carl’s Got A Gun

If you’re like me, then you are chomping at the bit for February 12th to get here because that is the day that AMC brings back The Walking Dead. Given how the first half of the second season ended, you know that things are probably not going to get much better for everyone at Hershel’s farm.

Last week, AMC released the trailer teasing us with what is in store for the second half of the season.  I gotta say that I hate the fact that I have to wait.

If you have read the comics, then you can probably guess some of what will happen when you see images of Rick and Shane fighting and Carl with a gun. This is going to be awesome! Oh, and if you haven’t watched the show before, then there is still time to get caught up.

Why SOPA And PIPA Are Bad

If you tried to visit our site yesterday, you may have noticed that we were not our normal, cheery selves.  Like a lot of the Internet, we chose to protest legislation that is currently being kicked around Congress.  Remember that nice pop-up the first time you visited the site?  Yeah, that’s what that was about.  If you hadn’t heard of SOPA or PIPA before yesterday, hopefully you have heard of them now.  These laws will basically break the Internet as we know it and take us back to 1994.  I’m all for time travel, but not like this.

This is important because it affects everyone. Yes, I’m talking to you, and you, and you.  Do you like visiting our site?  Too bad.  If either of these laws pass, there is a good chance that this very site will be taken down.  Do you like visiting any site on the Internet?  Yeah, they’ll probably be gone too.  See what I’m talking about?  Big-time bad…  Under this law, if you post video of Michael Jackson’s Thriller video on the Web, you can go to prison for five years.  That’s longer than the guy who killed him will be locked up for.

If you listen to our podcast, then you’ve heard me say that the Internet is like the Wild West.  Imagine if there were no Wild West in American history.  Just think of all of the John Wayne movies that would have never been made.  No tales of Billy the Kid,  Butch Cassidy, or Wyatt Earp.  But more importantly, think of all of the innovation that would have never happened.  Would we have a trans-continental railroad?  Possibly not since there would be nothing west of the Mississippi River.  Would we have discovered the Grand Canyon or Yellowstone?  Who knows?

If you are still in the dark about what SOPA and PIPA are and what their effects on your life will be, here are some articles that I strongly suggest you take the time to read.  The people who wrote the articles are far more eloquent that I am and have a much better understanding of these laws than I do so take a minute and click on the links.

And since I understand that sometimes it’s easier to watch the movie than it is to read the book, here is a very well done cinematic production courtesy of YouTube.  (Which, I should mention, would be destroyed should SOPA or PIPA become law.)

If you haven’t done so already, please take a moment to call call those who allegedly represent you in Washington and let them know that you oppose what they are trying to do.  Unless, of course, you hate free speech and innovation.  Then, by all means, continue to do nothing as your rights are stripped away by greedy politicians.

Mythbusters Are Coming!

For those who are unaware, the Mythbusters, specifically Jamie Hyneman  and Adam Savage, are coming to Salt Lake City tonight to perform a live show to a sold-out audience.  I was among those fortunate enough to get tickets.  As a result, I was also fortunate(?) to be interviewed by The Daily Utah Chronicle regarding the show.  It’s not just me in the article so I thought that it would be good to share with you, our regular readers.

Adam Savage and Jamie Hyneman are best known for hosting the hit television show “Mythbusters.” They will bring the same theatrical stunts and experiments to Kingsbury Hall for a sold-out live performance tonight.

“This performance will capture the spirit of everything that the Mythbusters do,” said Bruce Grantham, marketing officer for Magicspace Entertainment.

This is the duo’s second trip to Salt Lake City, when they also spoke in front of a sold-out crowd. For previous tours, “Mythbusters Live” was in a lecture format, but this year’s tour has live demonstrations and audience participation.

The night will feature special effects, music and a Q-and-A session after the show, Grantham said. He said he did not want to reveal specifics because “the surprise is the exciting part.”

“ ‘Mythbusters’ appeals to me because of the scientific aspect,” said Jeremiah Zohner, a Davis County resident. “I also like to see stuff blow up — it’s good entertainment.”

Zohner said he has been watching “Mythbusters” since the first season, but has never seen the Mythbusters during a live performance and wants to see how Hyneman acts off camera. He would be thrilled to get picked to participate, he said.

The tour began Friday and is working its way across the country. After the performance in Salt Lake City, the duo will move to Arizona, then California.

The performance takes place at Kingsbury Hall at 7:30 p.m.

You Have Options

We’ve all experienced it.  You go to a webpage and it fails to load.  You check another site which also fails to load.  After 20 minutes of troubleshooting, you come to the conclusion that the internet is down.  What do you do?  Well, thanks to the folks over at Geeks are Sexy, we now know how to fill the void in our lives until our ISP gets their crap together and restores our connection to the World Wide Web.
