Bond, James Bond

My name is.....

Why are geeks interested in the James Bond movies?

Duh!!

1- Girls

2- Gadgets

3- Guns

4- Spanish Inquisition (whoops, sorry I didn’t expect that)

5- Style

James Bond is a badass.  He’s a badass that has kewl toys, gets the girls and blows up a lot of things in style.  One moment Sean Connery has a duck on his head swimming through the water, the next he’s in a tuxedo.   And that tuxedo probably has more devices imbedded in it than my cell phone.

Several years ago when I was interviewing Anthony “C3PO” Daniels in Denver, even he stated he wanted to be James Bond when he walks out of the theater.  Wearing a tux for my friends wedding, I would look at myself in the mirror and repeat the immortal line “Bond….James Bond”  I could never keep up that level of style needed (there are too many times I’m wanting to get back in my jeans and t-shirt to relax).  I think that one of the reasons that a lot of people enjoy following the James Bond franchise is the way it allows us to escape from reality and pretend that we are an international spy or the seductive temptress speeding down the Monte Carlo roadways in an Aston Martin sportscar (again filled with gadgets).

I also remember not being allowed to watch James Bond on TV when I was growing up.  My parents thought it was too risque for a thirteen year old.  I remember begging to stay up and watch the Sunday Night Movie on ABC.  Since I wasn’t allowed to stay up, and the parents were going to watch anyway, I snuck downstairs and watched from the stairs where my parents couldn’t see me.  This is how I first saw The Spy Who Loved Me and Moonraker.  Not being allowed to watch only made me want to watch more.  Now Mr. Bond cannot escape the diabolical laser that is contained within my DVD player.  Wuahhahahahahahah..ha….ha….uh..ok.

Who can for get the classic lines: Bond “Do you expect me to talk?” Goldfinger (laughing) “No Mr. Bond, I expect you to die.”  Roger Moore was classic with his one-liners dropped at the end of a tense scene.  I blame James Bond as much as I blame my Father for the bad one-liners I use in various responses.

The new James Bond movie, Quantum of Solace, will be released on Friday, November 14.  It will be the 22nd movie (24th if you count the two off-beat Bond movies) in the franchise spanning back for over 45 years.  It is the second Bond movie for Daniel Craig.  I think the use of different actors in the Bond role keeps the character fresh (you could tell it was time for Roger Moore to hang it up after watching A View to a Kill.)  It also supports my theory that James Bond is a Gallifreyan Time Lord.

I will be at the theater this Friday, waiting to hear the opening sequence to the James Bond theme.  Until that happens, I leave you with this…….

Reaction to David Tennant leaving Doctor Who

Doctor Who makes an announcement.

Doctor Who makes an announcement.

Rumors have been flying fast and furious.  David Tennant, our current resident Time Lord, took some time away from the show to work with the Royal Shakespear Company (with Patrick Stewart).  Usually when something like this happens on a BBC production, the actors are moving on.  Yes after much deliberation, David announced that he would be leaving the TARDIS when the scheduled Doctor Who specials have been completed.

This sucks.  But it is official as you can see here: http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/entertainment/7698539.stm

With the article was an interview with David about his decision to leave.  As I was watching it David mentioned how excited he was to see how they would do the regeneration scene.  The BBC literally gets to kill the main character of a hit show and have the show continue.  The regeneration scene was originally conceived when William Hartnel (the first Doctor) decided to leave the show.  The script writer, Gerry Davis, proposed that the alien doctor could have the ability to die and return with a new body.  This would allow them to continue the show with a younger actor in the lead role.  Recasting kept the show fresh and allowed it to continue for 40 years.

I think this is a perfect example of how Science Fiction can help enhance a storytelling opportunity.

After watching the interview on the BBC site, I started thinking about the various regenerations we’ve seen over the years.  Through the power of the internet, we can re-live them now.

Doctor Who Regenerations

How will the 10th Doctor be forced to regenerate?  Even David Tennent dosen’t know.  I can’t wait to find out.

The Visitors are our friends…again

As a fan of a lot of Sci-Fi shows, I end up joining various fan clubs. Of course I run the USS Ticonderoga fan club for Star Trek. I’ve been involved in various clubs for Star Wars, Doctor Who, Firefly and others. One of these is the Visitors Fifth Column, a fan club of the various V mini-series and television series. Today the leader of the local chapter directed me towards a Variety report announcing that ABC would be producing a re-image of the V story. Warner Brothers TV will be producing the show.

Did you miss me?

Did you miss me?

Scott Peters, the co-creator and executive producer of the USA series The 4400, will be writing the new adaptation. Peters has also written for The Outer Limits and Highlander. He has also directed for The 4400 and Jericho.

The new V will be modernized (hopefully giving us the same amount of fear the first series had) with Homeland Security and other multiple story lines. We won’t be seeing as much of the Nazi concept but we will see the results of people having blind faith in their leaders. We’ve been promised an invasion at the start with the Visitors promising to help Earth. This is Scott Peters second attempt to sell this to ABC (the first pitch built up enough interest to warrant a re-write).

I remember the awe I had watching this series back in 1983. Massive saucers gliding across the sky moving like chess pieces over each city. Sounds like it would make a good Will Smith movie huh? (wink) Unlike the old War of the Worlds classic, the aliens didn’t just blast us the moment they arrived. They had their arms opened in friendship and talked about sharing technology in exchange for our help. Slowly they took control of various aspects of our society while discrediting the scientists who could expose them. There were references to other Sci-Fi shows and it introduced me to a lot of talented actors. I also remember my Father scoring tickets to a Utah Jazz playoff game (at the start of their 19 year playoff appearance run) and the dilemma I felt when I found out it was on the same night as the final episode of the V mini-series. We learned how to set the VCR timer for the first time and prayed it would record.

I’ve always wondered what V would be like in modern times where communication over the internet is instant. IRC communications is one of the tools that helped the Soviet citizens resit the hardliners trying to take control in the August 1991 coup d’etat.

Geek Food Review: Arby’s Mac & Cheezers

Moving sucks. One of the bad things about moving is that by the end of the day no one wants to cook. So we checked out the postal spam and discovered that Arby’s had sent out a new batch of coupons. Hmm….Five for $5.00 on Arby’s Melts. That will cover the bulk of dinner. But we still need sides and something for a finicky daughter. She loves the mozzarella sticks. What’s this? Arby’s has a new sidekick item: Mac & Cheezers. With a coupon we buy one sidekick item (mozzarella sticks) and we get a serving of the new Mac & Cheezers for free. Sounds like a plan.

As we are sitting there eating our meal, the little squirrel comes out of the wheel in my head and smacks the back of my brain. “Hey you’ve been looking for an article idea for Stolen Droids, do a review of this new food item.” He says. Good idea I tell the squirrel before I use Klingon pain sticks to get him back in the wheel and make him start spinning faster than ever.

Essentially what Arby’s did is they cooked up some macaroni and cheese and put it into little bread pouches (same thing they put around the cheese sticks). Then they fried them up. Somehow the cheese keeps its texture and the macaroni looks like macaroni. What amazed me is that the breading didn’t overwhelm the macaroni and cheese flavor. It still tasted like traditional (OK as traditional as you can get from a box) mac-n-cheese.

Bill Engvall would approve.

Bill Engvall would approve.

Of course the first thing I thought of when wanting to write this article was the quote from comedian Bill Engvall about broke food on his album “Dorkfish”. “There are people alive today because of Macaroni and Cheese.” I am one of these people who survived because of the cheap boxes of generic mac-n-cheese back in my bachelor days. A little bit of milk, some butter and you’ve got a meal. I would usually find myself eating it right out of the pot as I was watching the latest episode of Star Trek: The Next Generation (the heat from the pot would iron a single spot on my pants). I’m certain that a lot of people have found Macaroni and Cheese to be comfort food. So to create a fast-food option for this was a good idea on the part of Arby’s.

Now this will not replace the Apollo Burger fries or the Iceberg onion rings as my favorite fast-food side dish, but if I’m trying to avoid an overdose of generic side dishes, I’ll pick up some Mac & Cheezers with my Philly Sub or Beef-n-Cheddar.

Note to Self: Do not write up any future food reviews before lunch.

Geek Joy

Lots of good things happened last weekend at Mountain-Con IV. Lot of things also need to be improved (as with any volunteer run organization). But let me show you the best thing that happened to me over the weekend.

The Artist Guest of Honor was David Reddick. David draws the Garfield comic strip for newspapers (yes he is authorized) but his fun job is drawing several Star Trek themed comics. One is called The Trek Life.

http://www.startrek.com/startrek/view/features/treklife.html

The main character for this series is a Trek Obsessed fan named Carl. A lot of people have compared me to this character. Ok more than a lot of you. When I heard that David was coming, I wanted to commission this piece of artwork from him.

The Carls
The Carls

When I approached David to request this, not only did he know about the request before hand (up to a year in advance), he was honored to meet “The real Carl” as he put it. Four different people came up while he was drawing and asked “Is this the special artwork that Carl wanted.” I was even proud that David liked a line from my life (which hopefully may make it into a future strip).

I was so excited I showed everyone at the con. I probably encouraged several more sales with how much showing off I did.

There is much more to tell from the con, however without internet access at home, I don’t know when I’ll be able to post a full report.

This baby is getting framed and going on the wall.

Fall 2008 geek shows on the network

The new television shows for Fall 2008 network season are almost here.   Amid the cesspools known as ‘reality’ tv, cop show copy-cats and lame sitcoms we can usually find nuggets of interesting television.  Here are some of the shows that I feel would be of interest to fellow geeks with some of my comments for you to rip apart.  With some of the schedule conflicts, I can only thank the gods for DVR service.  All times posted are Eastern.
Think a show is missing from this list?  Remember that several shows have Mid-season premiers such as Lost (ABC), Reaper (CW), 24 (Fox) and Merlin (new show, NBC) .

I’m also interested in hearing what other geeks are looking forward to.

Knight Rider

On a crusade....

Mondays:
8:00pm Terminator: The Sarah Conner Chronicles (Fox)- Returning show starts on September 8th.  I will be watching this show again.  I really didn’t think this would make good episodic television, but I found myself watching each week.

8:00pm Chuck (NBC)- Returning show starts on September 29th. So far I’ve only been moderately impressed with this show as I thought that Jake 2.0 was better.  Going against Terminator in the same timeslot may not be the best idea.

9:00pm Heroes (NBC)- Returning show starts on September 22nd.  Another show I can’t wait for.  Season two wasn’t as good as the first, but the writing is still good.  Our Heroes must capture newly escaped villains with various superpowers.

10:00pm My Own Worst Enemy (NBC)- New show starting on October 13th.  Christian Slater’s character has two lives, average dude and bold superspy.  One doesn’t know about the other until the barrier separating the two start to break down.  First the promos on the Olympics didn’t interest me.  But the Jekyll and Hyde combo may draw attention to this show.

Tuesdays:
9:00pm Fringe (Fox)- New show from J.J. Abrams that will start on September 9th.  Bold new show or X-Files wanabe?  Both have an FBI agent investigating unusual cases.  Will Fox allow a Sci-Fi show to survive?  Well we did get a second season of Terminator: The Sarah Conner Chronicles so who knows.

Wednesdays:
8:00pm Knight Rider (NBC)- New show starting on September 24th.  Growing up in the 80’s I remember the original show.  I liked the pilot movie and thought that Val Kilmer did a very good job as the voice for K.I.T.T.  I want to see where they take this, especially when the Hoff returns.

Thursdays:
8:00pm Smallville (CW)- Returning show starting on September 18th.  Wow eight seasons?  Could this show survive the demise of the network?  I dropped this show in the first season because I didn’t want to watch teen-angst with superpowers.  Now people tell me this is one of the best geek series on television.  Should I just buckle down and watch all the episodes on DVD or should I only watch certain key shows?

9:00pm Supernatural (CW)- Returning show starting on September 18th. First I only watched this with my geek wife, but I’ve started following this show as well.  It turned out a lot better than I expected it to be.  I enjoyed the Ghostfacers episode from the previous season.

10:00pm Life on Mars (ABC)- New show starting on October 9th.  A cop travels through time from 2008 to 1973.  Will this be good (despite the number of cop shows out there) or a bad rippoff of the BBC version?  I’m interested in seeing Colm Meaney in this.

10:00pm Eleventh Hour (CBS)- New show starting on October 9th.  Yet another BBC import that the American studios decided to try.  I love watching BBC America to see what will be ripped off next.  An investigator of unusual scientific cases is sent out to solve crimes as the last line of defense.  Could be too close to a cop show copy-cat that Hollywood has a fixation on.

Fridays:
8:00pm Crusoe (NBC)- New show starting on October 17th.  I debated putting this one here.  The show is based in the 17th Century (when the novel was written).   Filmed in England for American viewers.  I’ll put this one up for the History geeks.

Saturdays:
Repeats of Knight Rider are scheduled on Saturdays at 9:00pm

Sundays:
FOX continues its Sunday animated line up.  Family Guy, American Dad, King of the Hill and the 147th season of The Simpsons starts on September 28th.    Outside of the specials, I really don’t catch any of these.

Latest Rumor: New Red Dwarf episode?

New Red Dwarf episode from the BBC?  Could it be true?

The PBS station in Steattle, KCTS 9 hosted Robert Llewellyn (aka Kryten) for a 20th Anniversary Celebration of Red Dwarf on Sunday, August 24th.  To advertise the event Robert recorded a special promo seen here:

http://www.kcts9.org/video/red-dwarf-robert-llewellyn-coming-seattle

On this video he states that he has some special news about the future of the show and that he was saving it for his visit.

Fans watched the show and posted a report on the official Robert Llewellyn message boards.  Here is that link:

http://llewtube.com/forums/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=841

At KCTS Robert announced that BBC Worldwide has commisioned a 1 hour episode of Red Dwarf.  The script is in the final stages now and should be filming in October of 2008.  He wouldn’t provide any details on the plot.

So far my search has only turned up these two items.  As I come accross more information, I’ll post it here.

(now commencing happy Dalek dance)

So what does it take to put together a Fan-Run Sci-Fi Convention?

[Editor's Note: TardisCaptain, has been attending conventions since the late eighties from Seattle to Los Angels to Oklahoma and all points in-between. This includes General SF conventions, gaming cons, charity cons, LAN expos and of course Star Trek cons. He has volunteered at various local conventions including Conduit, LTUE and Mountain-Con. He was the ConChair of Mountain-Con I, II and III and is still a trustee for Mountain-Con.]

Attending a convention is a rare treat. There is usually a large buzz of fans wanting to meet their favorite author or actor. Other fans are excited because they have the opportunity to share their fandom. Merchants have brought rare and unusual items to the dealers’ room. Games have been prepared by Game Masters, LARP Judges and LAN coordinators. Costumers have spent thousands of dollars and thousands of man-hours preparing costumes. Artists have submitted images of their imagination to the art-show or film festival. All of these fans have brought something to contribute to the excitement of a convention. All for one glorious geek-fest-filled three days.

The question I pose for all of the fans out there, have you ever wondered what it takes to put a Fan-Run SF Convention together? Well the first keyword is ‘Fans’; volunteers are needed to put together the ConCom (Convention Committee). The phrase “Many hands make light work” really applies here. The more volunteers that are helping throughout the year the easier it is to put together the con.

Out of these volunteers you need to find the person who has the following qualifications. Can they run a small business? Do they have experience with convention running? Are they willing to take the blame when things go wrong? Are they willing to play referee between egos? Are they willing to do all of the jobs of the volunteers underneath them? If you have someone crazy enough to do this (check local insane asylums for possible candidates) then elect that person to be the Convention Chair (aka ConChair). Since the ConCom is made up of volunteers, the ConChair needs to be the glue that holds everyone together and keep them focused on putting together the next convention. The ConChair also coordinates the monthly meetings (multiple meetings held most months), reports to the trustees on the status of the con, name a Co-Chair (basically an assistant who is second-in-command) and basically keep an eye on all of the various sub-committees and chairs.

The remaining members left in the asylum will then fill out the other positions within the ConCom. Each group could be run by just the position chair and co-chair or create a sub-committee to help out.

Accounting- Do you have the lobes for this job?

Anime- Dubbed vs Sub-titles debate goes on.

Art-Show- Oh shiny and you want to sell it too?

Banquet- Yes you can have a formal dinner with the guests.

Dealers Room- These merchants came all the way from Diagon Alley.

Fan Club- The ‘Home Boys from Outer Space’ fan club wants a promotion table?

Fan Film- We are showing it at the con before releasing it on the internet.

Filk- La-la-la-la

Gaming- Where are the Cheetos?

Guest- I need a volunteer to be Jeri Ryan’s assistant

Hotel- Yes discounted sleeping rooms are available at the hotel.

Kid-Con- We are raising the next generation of geeks.

Masquerade- Yes that chain-mail covers enough of you to go on stage.

Operations- You have five minutes until the end of your panel.

Programming- We can put the Ghost Hunting panel across from the MMORPG panel.

Publicity- Getting the word out about the con.

Publishing- The due date for the programming book is coming up soon.

Registration- Badges? Yes you need your stinkin’ badges.

Security- Why do people snicker when they see us in red shirts?

Volunteer- You really want to help out? Oh bless you!

Once these positions have been filled then the Con-Chair makes sure everyone is filling their volunteer duties in a timely manner. We do not have a TARDIS to travel back in time to beat the deadlines, and these deadlines come quicker than most people expect. Hotel and Guest arrangements must be made very early in the process (sometimes more than a year in advance). Travel and lodging for the guests must be set up (and paid for in advance). The convention space and sleeping rooms need to be agreed upon between convention and hotel. This helps determine the date of the convention (a huge factor for attendees). Programming of panels, gaming, special events and media (anime and fan films) must be completed months in advance in order to make publishing deadlines. Pre-sales of convention memberships and dealers room tables help bring in early funding for the con. Local fan clubs and organizations (SCA to grassroots space supporters to gaming to fan clubs of various shows) need to be coordinated for possible volunteers, sales, room parties, promotion booths, etc.). The booth space for both Dealers Room and Fan Clubs need to be coordinated. Security concerns at the hotel space need to be identified and addressed. Before you know it, months have passed and we are approaching the convention date.

There are a ton of things that can be put together for an enjoyable convention. The three things that may prevent a convention from running a certain event are three things. 1-Lack of money, 2-Lack of volunteers or 3-Lack of time. Like a major motion picture, there comes a time when you have to put an end to the preparation and release the con. However what is released is the heart and soul that an army of volunteers have put together in the name of fun and fandom. You may see a lot of zombie like stares at the dead-dog party (following the end of the convention) but they all know one thing. They volunteered because it was worth it.

If you want a chance to see the fun and excitement of geeks sharing their fandom, check out a nearby fan-run convention (SHAMELESS PLUG ALERT) like Mountain-Con IV held on September 19-21 in Utah. Details can be found at http://www.MountainCon.org.

Free book from Rebecca Moesta & Kevin J Anderson

Cover of the new Crystal Doors novel

Kevin J Anderson may be known to some fans as a Star Wars author.  I’ve enjoyed his works with Brian Herbert in the Dune universe (The Prelude to Dune series is one of my favorites) .  Kevin and Rebecca have released several other novels as well.  The Crystal Doors is a young-adult fantasy trilogy and the authors are sending free signed copy (you only cover the shipping and handling).
